Example: EURUSD with 1% risk

Risk: 1% of $100,000 = $1,000 Stop distance: 1.16500 − 1.16250 = 0.00250 (25 pips) Loss per lot: 0.00250 × 100,000 units = $250 Position size: $1,000 ÷ $250 = 4.00 lots

How lot size is calculated

Every calculation follows the same three steps:

  1. Risk amount — the money you’re willing to lose if the stop-loss is hit, e.g. 1% of your balance.
  2. Loss per lot — the distance between entry and stop-loss × the contract size (units per lot) × the exchange rate from the instrument’s quote currency to your account currency.
  3. Lots — risk amount ÷ loss per lot, rounded down to your broker’s lot step (usually 0.01).

Questions

Why enter prices instead of pips?

Because that’s what you see on the chart. “Pip” means different things on gold, indices and crypto, and some brokers count points instead. A price difference is never ambiguous.

What about JPY pairs and cross pairs?

On USDJPY or EURGBP the loss is in the quote currency (JPY, GBP). The calculator converts it to your account currency at the latest ECB reference rate, which you can overwrite with your broker’s rate.

Why round down?

Rounding to the nearest lot could put you slightly over your risk. Rounding down keeps the actual risk at or below what you set — the calculator shows the exact amount.

Why do index lot sizes differ between brokers?

For indices and commodities, brokers choose their own contract size: one lot of NAS100 can be 1, 10 or 20 units of the index. Check the symbol’s contract (lot) size in your platform and enter it — the result changes in proportion.

Is it suitable for prop firm challenges?

Yes. Many traders size a challenge from the initial balance rather than the current equity — enter whichever balance you size from.

Exchange rates are ECB reference rates from Frankfurter, updated once a working day. Results are guidance — check them against your platform before you trade.

Draw it once. That’s your order.
